A German vocabulary app that shows you the parts of a word

German builds words out of parts. Ausbildung is ausbilden + -ung, and ausbilden is aus + bilden. verstehen, bestehen, entstehen and gestehen share one root with four different prefixes. Once you see the parts, a new word stops being a random string you have to memorize.

A translation tells you what a word means. It does not show how the word is built. Worio shows you both.

What you get on each card

When you save a word in Worio, the card is filled in for you. You do not type the meaning or look up examples yourself.

  • Morphology breakdown: the prefix, root and suffix when a word has them, and for separable verbs the particle, with short English explanations.
  • Article and gender for nouns, color-coded next to the word.
  • Meaning and example sentences, with more than one sense when the word has more than one.
  • CEFR level (A1 to C2), so you know if a word is everyday or exam-level.
  • Hear the word spoken with your phone's text-to-speech.

Three ways to add words

  1. Type one bare word. Quick Add saves it instantly, even offline, and fills in the card when you are back online.
  2. Paste a text, like an email, an article or a message from your landlord. Worio pulls out the German words.
  3. Scan a photo of a letter or a page. The text lands in Worio for you to check, then Worio pulls out the German words.

Then you practice them

Flashcards, multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank (cloze) and interactive stories built from your own saved words. Worio brings your saved words back for review, so you remember the words you actually meet.

Who it is for

Worio is built for adults at B1 and above, especially those living in a German-speaking country. You already know the grammar basics. What slows you down is meeting more new words every day than you can keep. Hien Nguyen, the founder of Worio, built it for learners at exactly that stage.

Worio, Wiktionary and Anki

Wiktionary shows how a word is built in its etymology sections, and Anki schedules your reviews for you. You can combine them by hand: look the word up, copy the breakdown, paste it into a card. Worio does that step for you. If you love building your own cards, Anki is still a great choice. If you want to type the word and start practicing, Worio is built for that.

Frequently asked

Yes. Type one word, just the bare German word, and Worio fills in the card for you: the meaning, example sentences, the article for nouns, the CEFR level and, when the word has parts, the prefix-root-suffix breakdown.
