Worio vs Anki for German vocabulary: an honest comparison

Anki is a brilliant flashcard engine. Worio is a German vocabulary app that explains every word. Here is when to pick which.

We make Worio, so read this with that in mind. We have tried to be fair, and Anki genuinely wins in several places. The short version: Anki is a spaced-repetition engine you fill yourself, and it will do whatever you build into it. Worio is a German vocabulary app that explains every word you save and reviews it for you. They solve different problems, and for some learners the real answer is both.

The short answer

If you already enjoy building your own system, study multiple subjects, or want a free tool on desktop, Anki is hard to beat. If you are learning German specifically, want each word explained rather than just repeated, and do not want to spend time making cards, Worio is the better fit.

What Anki does best

Anki is built around customisation: card templates, add-ons and the scheduling algorithm can all be adjusted to fit how you want to study, and shared decks are widely available if you would rather start from one than build your own from scratch.

  • It is free and open source on desktop (Windows, Mac, Linux) and on Android through AnkiDroid.
  • AnkiMobile on iPhone is a one-time paid app, rather than a subscription.
  • You build or import your own cards and decks, and shared decks are widely available.
  • Card templates, add-ons and the scheduling algorithm are all highly customisable.
  • It works for any subject, not just language, so one tool can cover everything you study.
  • Syncing across devices through AnkiWeb is free.

What Worio does best

Worio starts from a different question: not "how do I review this card", but "what actually is this word". That shapes everything else about how it works, starting with the fact that you never build a card in the first place.

  • WordDNA explains how a German word is built, prefix, root and family, in English, rather than showing only what you wrote on a card.
  • Cards are not something you make. You save a word by pasting German text or typing it, and Worio builds the explanation automatically.
  • Spaced review is built in across four free practice modes, plus Story Practice, a Premium mode with occasional free passes from the daily gift.
  • There is a free plan, with 30 days of Premium to try, no card required.

Who should pick Anki

Pick Anki if you enjoy building your own system, study several subjects at once and want one tool for all of them, want a completely free desktop app, or already have decks you are happy with. If tinkering with templates and add-ons is part of how you like to study, that preference matters more than any feature comparison, Anki rewards that kind of engagement directly.

Who should pick Worio

Pick Worio if you are at B1 to C1, meet new German words in real content rather than a textbook, and want every word explained and connected to what you already know without spending time making cards. If opening a card editor and typing in your own definition sounds like a chore rather than a study method, that is a clear signal Worio is the better starting point. See how to build a personal German word bank for how that workflow works in practice, or German prefixes for a sense of what WordDNA actually explains.

Using both

Plenty of learners use both without conflict: Worio for the explanation and the save-as-you-go workflow, Anki for subjects outside German or for a review style they have already built and like. A common pattern is saving and understanding German words in Worio as you meet them in real content, then keeping a separate Anki deck running for another subject entirely, or for a personal deck you are already attached to. Neither tool asks you to give up the other, they simply are not competing for the same slot in your routine.

Duolingo, briefly

Duolingo is good for complete beginners and for building a daily habit through guided lessons. It is not built for saving and understanding the words you meet on your own at B1 and above, which is a different job than either Anki or Worio is doing. Many learners outgrow Duolingo around B1, once the content they want to understand stops coming from inside an app and starts coming from real German they find themselves.

Fair warning: we make Worio. If you want a second opinion beyond this page, read Anki's own documentation or a neutral comparison before deciding.
