German Exam Writing Tips for B1, B2 and C1 (With Before and After Examples)

Real before and after corrections for B1, B2 and C1 German writing tasks, plus the connectors examiners actually reward.

German exam writing tips usually stop at "use connectors" and "check your grammar," advice that is true but not very useful under time pressure. What actually moves your score at B1, B2 or C1 is simpler and more concrete: cover every point the prompt asks for, in order, and connect your sentences with the register your level expects. Examiners grade against a fixed checklist, not a gut feeling about your German, and a complete, well-connected answer beats a shorter one with perfect grammar almost every time. Below are three before and after corrections, one for each level, plus the writing-day plan that keeps you from losing points you already know how to avoid. Every task and example on this page is written by us for teaching purposes, not copied from a real Goethe, telc or DTB exam.

Key takeaways - Examiners score German writing tasks against a fixed checklist: did you cover every required point, connect your ideas, and use language suited to your level. Flawless grammar does not make up for a missing point. - B1 writing stays personal and connected (informal letters, short opinions); B2 adds a stated position with two-sided arguments; C1 expects hedged, source-aware phrasing and a nuanced, not one-sided, conclusion. - The three worked examples below show exactly which words and structures turn a weak draft into a stronger one at each level, not just abstract advice. - Goethe-Institut's own exam rules show writing is double-marked out of 100 points, with 60 needed to pass. A third examiner only steps in if the two scores disagree across that line. - Worio's German Writing Coach gives you feedback on your own draft the way the examples below show, before the real exam.

German exam writing tips: what changes between B1, B2 and C1

Goethe-Zertifikat exams keep the writing (Schreiben) module separate from reading, listening and speaking, and the time you get for it grows with the level: 60 minutes at B1, and 75 minutes at both B2 and C1, according to the Goethe-Institut's own exam regulations, updated September 2025. What you are asked to produce changes more than the clock does.

LevelTypical taskTime for Schreiben (Goethe)What the CEFR expects
B1A personal email or letter on a familiar topic, covering 3 to 4 content points60 minutesSimple connected text on familiar topics; personal letters describing experiences and impressions
B2An opinion piece or formal letter that states and supports a position75 minutesClear, detailed text; an essay or report that gives reasons for or against a viewpoint
C1A more formal or abstract essay, often weighing a complex issue75 minutesWell-structured text expressing a point of view at length, in a style suited to the reader

The CEFR column above summarizes the Council of Europe's own self-assessment grid for writing. At every level, two examiners score your Goethe writing independently against the same fixed criteria, out of 100 points, and you need 60 to pass that module, the same 60 percent bar used across Goethe levels. telc exams run on the same logic: a separate written exam with its own writing task, scored apart from speaking. Most goethe exam writing tips online focus on grammar drills; the real difference is matching your content and register to what your level's task is actually asking for.

B1 writing, a real before and after

The prompt: Write an email to a friend. Explain why you moved, describe your new home, and invite them to visit.

Weak draft:

Liebe Anna, Ich bin umgezogen. Die neue Stadt ist schön. Ich habe eine neue Wohnung. Sie ist klein aber ok. Ich arbeite viel. Vielleicht kannst du kommen. Deine Lisa

Stronger version:

Liebe Anna, ich habe dir lange nicht geschrieben, weil ich mitten im Umzug war! Ich bin nach Leipzig gezogen, weil ich hier eine neue Stelle als Ingenieurin gefunden habe. Meine neue Wohnung ist klein, aber sie hat einen Balkon, und ich kann morgens die Sonne sehen. Nächsten Monat habe ich zwei freie Wochenenden, kommst du mich besuchen? Ich zeige dir die Stadt und wir kochen zusammen. Schreib mir bald! Deine Lisa

What changed, and why it matters more than it looks:

  • weil ich hier eine neue Stelle gefunden habe answers the "why did you move" point directly. The weak draft never says why, which is a missing content point, not a grammar mistake, and content points cost more.
  • One weil clause and one question (kommst du mich besuchen?) replace six short, disconnected sentences. At B1, examiners are checking whether you can connect simple ideas at all, not whether you use advanced connectors.
  • Balkon and die Sonne sehen replace the vague klein aber ok. A specific detail reads as more competent than a flat description, even though the grammar is no harder.
  • The invitation becomes concrete (nächsten Monat, zwei freie Wochenenden) instead of a hedge (vielleicht). The prompt said "invite her to visit": a real invitation with a time does that, a maybe does not.

If you want a reusable structure for this exact kind of email task, see the B1/B2 email template for exam writing.

B2 writing, a real before and after

The prompt: Write a short opinion piece: should schools ban mobile phones during lessons?

Weak draft:

What changed:

  • Ich bin der Meinung, dass replaces ich bin nicht sicher. B2 opinion tasks score you on taking and defending a position, which lines up with the CEFR's own description of B2 writing as giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view. A shrug is not a position.
  • Einerseits ... andererseits is the single most useful connector pair for goethe b2 writing tasks: it lets you acknowledge both sides without losing your stated opinion, which is exactly what the weak draft tried and failed to do with a bare aber.
  • Außerdem zeigen Studien, dass ... adds a second, independent reason instead of repeating the first one in different words, which is what the vague "Vor- und Nachteile" line was really doing.
  • The closing concession (auch wenn ich verstehe, dass ...) rounds the answer off with a conclusion instead of trailing out on a flat list, which most B2 tasks grade on directly.

For the classic advantages-and-disadvantages structure that B2 opinion tasks often reward, see the Gakguks method for weighing both sides.

C1 writing, a real before and after

The prompt: Write a short essay on how remote work is changing workplace culture.

Weak draft:

What changed:

  • Studien zufolge opens with a hedge instead of ich glaube. C1 writing is graded partly on register, and a personal opinion marker in the first sentence reads as B2, not C1.
  • Allerdings wäre es verkürzt, ausschließlich Vorteile zu betonen directly answers the weak draft's es gibt keine Nachteile. An absolute claim is the fastest way to look less advanced than you are; naming the counterpoint and arguing past it is what selecting a style suited to a critical reader actually looks like.
  • Vor diesem Hintergrund erscheint ... closes with a formal, impersonal conclusion instead of a flat recommendation, matching the longer, subordinate-clause sentence structure C1 raters expect, such as der Wegfall des Pendelns, a nominalized clause, instead of man muss nicht pendeln.
  • Every sentence in the stronger version carries more than one idea. That is a deliberate C1 move: it is what expressing a point of view at some length looks like on the page.

Connectors and sentence openers that actually move the needle, by level

You do not need fifty connectors. You need the two or three that match your level's task, used correctly, every time. German sentence frames cover the full pattern list for speaking and writing together; here is the short version for writing specifically.

LevelUse thisNot thisWhy
B1weil, deshalb, zuerst ... danna string of flat sentencesShows you can connect a reason to a result, the core B1 skill
B2ich bin der Meinung, dass; einerseits ... andererseits; außerdemaber, aloneSignals a stated position plus a counterpoint, not just a contrast
C1Studien zufolge; vor diesem Hintergrund; allerdings wäre es verkürzt, zu behaupten, dassich glaube; es gibt keine NachteileHedges the claim and acknowledges complexity, the register C1 raters expect

Pick one pair per paragraph. Using every connector in this table in a single answer reads as a list, which is its own kind of mistake.

A simple writing-day plan: plan, write, check

Most point losses on exam day come from time management, not grammar. A short plan fixes most of that.

  1. Plan (2 to 3 minutes). Write down every content point the prompt asks for before your first sentence. A missing point costs more than almost any grammar mistake, at every level from B1 to C1.
  2. Write (your time budget minus the plan and check steps). Aim for the word count your exam gives you, roughly, not exactly. Use one connector pair from the table above per paragraph, and avoid translating an English sentence word for word into German; if a sentence feels hard to say in German, it is usually the wrong sentence for the task.
  3. Check (the last 3 to 5 minutes). Reread for the content points first: did you answer all of them? Then check verb position (second in main clauses, final in subordinate clauses) and that you have not started every sentence with Ich.

Get feedback on your own writing the way the examples above show, before the real exam.

Frequently asked

Covering every required content point in a logical order and connecting your ideas with the register your level expects matters more than flawless grammar. A complete, well-connected answer that covers every point beats a shorter, grammatically perfect one that misses a point.
