How to Prepare a German Exam Presentation: The T-M-B-F-S Formula

For a German exam presentation, use T-M-B-F-S: Thema, Meinung, Beispiel, Folgen, Schluss. This structure helps you speak clearly without memorizing a fragile full script. A full script can be useful for early practice, but the safer exam strategy is to memorize a structure and flexible sentence blocks.
The T-M-B-F-S formula
- T — Thema: Introduce the topic (Ich möchte heute über … sprechen.)
- M — Meinung: Give your opinion (Meiner Meinung nach ist … wichtig, weil …)
- B — Beispiel: Give one concrete example (Ein Beispiel dafür sind … / Zum Beispiel können …)
- F — Folgen: Explain effects, advantages, or disadvantages (Das hat den Vorteil, dass … / Andererseits gibt es auch Nachteile.)
- S — Schluss: Finish with a clear conclusion (Zusammenfassend kann man sagen, dass …)

"Ich möchte heute über Online-Lernen sprechen. Das Thema ist heute sehr aktuell, weil viele Menschen flexibel lernen möchten. Meiner Meinung nach ist Online-Lernen praktisch, weil man Zeit sparen kann. Ein Beispiel dafür sind Berufstätige, die abends Deutsch lernen. Das hat den Vorteil, dass sie flexibler sind. Prepare all possible topics with the same structure
If your exam has eight possible topics, do not create eight completely different presentation styles. Use the same T-M-B-F-S structure for all topics. For each topic, prepare: your opinion, one example, one advantage, one disadvantage, and a conclusion sentence. This makes practice easier and more efficient.
Help your exam partner understand you
In group exams, your presentation is not only for the examiner. Your partner may need to answer questions about what you said. So speak clearly: use signposting phrases, do not speak too fast, use one clear example, and finish with a simple conclusion.
