German Speaking Exam: How to Listen and Respond to Your Partner's Presentation
A simple active-listening system for German group speaking exams, including summary phrases and partner-question responses.
In some German speaking exams, you do not only present. You also listen to your partner and answer questions about what they said. The best shortcut is to listen for three things: topic, opinion, example. If you can summarise those three points, you can usually answer follow-up questions more confidently.
The 3-keyword listening method
- Topic: What was the presentation about?
- Opinion: What did the person think about it?
- Example: What example did they mention?
You do not need every detail. You need the main idea.
Useful phrases to summarise your partner
Er/Sie hat über … gesprochen. / Das Thema war … / Seine/Ihre Meinung war, dass … / Als Beispiel hat er/sie … genannt. / Ich fand interessant, dass … — Example: Sie hat über Online-Lernen gesprochen. Ihre Meinung war, dass Online-Lernen sehr flexibel ist. Als Beispiel hat sie Berufstätige genannt, die abends lernen.
If the examiner asks what you think
Ich stimme ihm/ihr zu, weil … / Ich sehe das ähnlich, weil … / Ich bin nicht ganz derselben Meinung, weil … / Ich möchte ergänzen, dass … — Example: Ich stimme ihr zu, weil Online-Lernen wirklich Zeit sparen kann. Aber ich denke auch, dass manche Menschen mehr direkten Kontakt brauchen.
If you did not understand everything
Wenn ich es richtig verstanden habe, ging es um … / Ich habe verstanden, dass … / Der wichtigste Punkt war meiner Meinung nach … — Example: Wenn ich es richtig verstanden habe, ging es um gesunde Ernährung. Der wichtigste Punkt war, dass kleine Gewohnheiten langfristig helfen können.
Partner practice drill
- Student A gives a one-minute presentation on any topic.
- Student B writes down three keywords: topic, opinion, example.
- Student B summarises in three sentences.
- Student A confirms or corrects.
- Switch roles and repeat.
