Before Your German Exam: How to Find Your Real Weaknesses Fast

A practical diagnostic method to find exam-critical weaknesses before wasting time on random German practice materials.

Before a German exam, the best first step is a short diagnostic. You need to find the weaknesses that will actually hurt your exam performance: unclear structure, missing Redemittel, weak listening summaries, wrong verb position, and repeated sentence-frame mistakes. This is different from trying to fix all grammar. Right before an exam, the focus should be on exam-critical problems.

What is an exam diagnostic?

A diagnostic is a short assessment that shows what is missing. It is not meant to grade you. It is meant to guide your practice. A useful German exam diagnostic answers these questions: Can you start a speaking task without panic? Can you give an opinion and a reason? Can you ask your partner a natural follow-up question? Can you structure a short presentation? Can you understand your partner well enough to summarise them? Can you use common sentence frames correctly?

The 30-minute diagnostic

  • 5 minutes — short writing task: check structure, connectors, task completion
  • 7 minutes — partner dialogue: check starting, responding, asking, next steps
  • 7 minutes — mini-presentation: check topic, opinion, example, conclusion
  • 5 minutes — listening summary: can the listener summarise the partner?
  • 6 minutes — error review: check repeated mistakes and missing Redemittel

Speaking weaknesses to check

Common speaking problems are not always grammar problems. Often they are structure problems. Watch for: the student does not know how to start, the answer is too short (just 'Ja, ich finde gut'), the student gives an opinion but no reason, the student talks too long without including the partner, the student cannot ask a follow-up question, the student cannot close the conversation.

Useful repair phrases: Ich meine damit, dass … / Ich formuliere es anders: … / Ein Beispiel dafür ist … / Was denkst du darüber?

Writing weaknesses to check

In writing, do not only count grammar mistakes. Check whether the text is exam-readable: Is there a clear introduction? Are the points organised? Are connectors used correctly? Are there examples? Is there a conclusion? Are the same mistakes repeated?

Useful writing structure: Zuerst möchte ich sagen, dass … / Ein wichtiger Vorteil ist … / Ein Problem könnte jedoch sein, dass … / Zum Beispiel … / Zusammenfassend bin ich der Meinung, dass …

Grammar-in-context weaknesses

Right before an exam, grammar should be practised inside useful sentences, not as isolated theory. Focus on structures that appear often: weil + verb at the end (Ich finde das gut, weil es Zeit spart), dass + verb at the end (Ich denke, dass diese Lösung sinnvoll ist), deshalb + verb position 2 (Es spart Zeit, deshalb finde ich es praktisch), sich interessieren für (Ich interessiere mich für dieses Thema), abhängen von (Es hängt davon ab, wie viel Zeit wir haben).

How to turn the diagnostic into a study plan

After the diagnostic, make a simple table of your top weaknesses, an example mistake, and the drill you will do. For example: cannot start dialogue → practise 5 card-start phrases; weak opinion → opinion + reason drill; verb position errors → weil/dass sentence frame drill; no conclusion → practise 3 conclusion phrases. The next session should drill only the top weaknesses first.

Frequently asked

No. Start with the grammar structures that appear inside your exam tasks. Sentence frames are more useful than abstract grammar lists in the final weeks.
